Enter depth of hole
Enter feed per revolution
Enter revolution of the job per minute

This lathe drilling time calculator finds how long it takes to drill a hole from the depth, feed rate, and spindle speed. Enter the values above to get the drilling time.

Formula

Time T = L ÷ (f × N)
  • L — hole depth (plus drill point allowance), f — feed per rev, N — rpm

Example

L = 50 mm, f = 0.1 mm/rev, N = 800 rpm: T = 50 ÷ (0.1 × 800) = 0.625 min.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate drilling time on a lathe?

Divide the hole depth by the feed per revolution times the spindle speed: T = L / (f x N).

Should I add the drill point length?

Yes. Add about 0.3 times the drill diameter to the depth to account for the conical point breaking through.

What feed rate should I use?

Feed depends on drill size and material; small drills use lighter feeds to avoid breakage.
